Chapter 13
Clementine kept coming up with topics to talk to Luke and asked about Spencer while she was at it.
Finally, she learned that Spencer was on a work trip overseas. He was probably so busy that he couldn't reply to her texts and phone calls. At least, that was what she told herself.
In all honesty, Clementine wasn't sure of herself at all. Although Spencer had arranged a place for her and helped her move into an apartment, he'd rejected her offer to go to her place alone every time she asked.
Eventually, things even reached a point where he'd stopped taking her calls and replying to her texts. Flat out of options, Clementine came up with the idea to wait at Nightdive with her friends, day in and day out.
Luke didn't really want to keep chatting with Clementine. After all, Spencer himself wasn't clear about how he felt for her, and Sara would remain his wife as long as he didn't divorce her.
Luke had had to search for an apartment for Clementine because Spencer told him to. Now, however, he had no intention to get too close to her. He didn't want to make it look like they knew each other well.
"It's getting late. I have to take them home." Luke rose to his feet and got ready to leave.
Wanda and Charlotte had already been wanting to leave when they saw how Clementine just wouldn't leave their booth. She'd even shamelessly struck up a conversation with Luke!
When they heard what Luke said, they immediately hopped to their feet and grabbed their coats and handbags.
Clementine saw what happened, got up, and said with a smile, "Gee, look at the time. I have to leave too."
Then, she turned around and looked at Wanda and Charlotte. She grinned. "This is the first time in a while that I got to see you two, but I don't have any gifts with me. I'll send some to Spencer's place and ask him to bring them to you."
Wanda had always been bold and straightforward. She stiffly responded, "I don't need any gifts. Spencer will buy me whatever I want."
Charlotte saw how awkward things were getting and diffused the tension. "It wouldn't be right to ask you to spend money on us, so we're good."
"It's only right. After all, young ladies absolutely love gifts. Come on, don't be a stranger. Well, I'll leave you guys to it then. Ciao." Clementine turned around and immediately left after she spoke, not giving them a chance to reject her.
…
On the way back, Wanda told Luke that she didn't have to go back to her dormitory and that she was going to spend the night at Charlotte's place.
So, Luke drove the both of them to Charlotte's apartment.
On their way there, they asked about Spencer and Clementine.
"Luke, what's going on between Spencer and Clementine? Is he going to get back together with her because he hasn't moved on from her?" Wanda boldly asked.
"Who knows? She's staying in the apartment he made me look for her. It's too early to tell," Luke replied.
"What about Sara then?" Charlotte asked.
"I have no idea what he's thinking. Perhaps it's difficult to move on from a first love. Also, you have to admit that he got married to Sara because of his grandpa.
"For that matter, Spencer has only ever been in a relationship once. It's very possible that he wants to be with his old flame again." Luke analyzed the situation for them in a clear and logical manner.
"Poor Sara. Spencer is such a scumbag too. He's a married man, for crying out loud. He shouldn't have done anything like this." Wanda grumbled.
"Finn said that Spencer's love life sucks more than mine. For the record, we're on Sara's side. The only thing we can do is wait for him to figure it out." Luke was more laid-back and not nearly as upset as they were.
"Clementine is a cunning lady. I'm just worried that Sara might leave him before he figures it out in time," Charlotte bluntly said.
Luke was aware that they had a point, but they couldn't meddle in Spencer's love life. So, he fell silent and dropped the matter.
…
Sara didn't get any texts from Spencer until the next evening, and it was brief too.
"Work's done. I'll be home in three days."
Again, it was short and brief, but it was enough to make Sara walk on cloud nine.
For the whole night, she was excited and kept checking her phone. It was just a few words—barely a sentence—but she just couldn't get enough of it.
Before she slept, Sara made her plans to go back before Spencer would return to Jeritho. It was almost time for a routine check-up, and she would be able to do it before he came home.
That day, Yale didn't go to Sara's place for a meal. After Sara talked to Ernest, she learned that they'd met early in the morning and that he had to return to Capira. Yale didn't say why, but something probably came up at his company.
Nevertheless, Yale left Sara his phone number and added her on WhatsApp before he left. At least then, they would surely have a chance to meet again. So, Sarah decided she would hang out with him when they got the chance to in the future.
The next morning, Sara called Ted and told him to pick her up after lunch. Then, she started packing up her stuff and carefully arranged the vegetables and eggs everyone gave her.
Once her luggage was packed, she intended to go up the mountain and say her farewell to Neil.
When she reached Neil's grave, she stood in front of the tombstone and said, "Grandpa, I'm going back to Jeritho today. I'll come back here with Spencer again."
…
It was already evening by the time Sara got back to the villa. She had a casual meal and recalled that she hadn't made an appointment for her check-up. So, she hastily pulled out her phone and scheduled it for the next day.
Then, she took a shower.
When she came out of the bathroom, her phone was ringing. She hurried over, picked it up, and saw that it was Spencer calling.
She hastily answered her phone, barely registering the nerve and joy in her voice. "Hi, Spencer."
"You're home." Spencer sounded sure, so Ted had probably told him about it.
"I just got home today. I brought a lot of vegetables and eggs back. Once you're home, I'll cook them for you," Sara merrily said.
"Alright. Get some sleep." Spencer heard the thrill in Sara's voice. Before he'd left, he had a feeling that something was bothering her. But it looked like a trip to her hometown made her feel much better.
"Okay, you too."
After Sara hung up the phone, she clutched it tightly and grinned like a fool for several minutes.
Spencer had always been brief and to the point whenever he called her, but she would be thrilled for a good while every time after they talked.
Sara got so excited that she rose to her feet and went to the kitchen to unpack everything she'd brought back. As she arranged them, she thought about the dishes she could make for Spencer.
Soon, it was midnight by the time she hit the bed.
…
The next morning, Sara called a cab and went to the hospital.
She hadn't made an appointment with the hospital up until yesterday evening. So, she had to wait for over an hour before it was her turn.
The ultrasound was the first test she did.
The doctor spent a long time checking the sonogram, and it made Sara very nervous. She thought that there was something wrong with her baby.
Just as she was about to ask the doctor about it, he told her that the test was done and that she could get up.
"You're having twins. Are you aware of that?"
Just one question, and the doctor had floored Sara.
She was rooted to the spot and absolutely shocked that she had twins in her belly. A wave of overwhelming joy drowned out all her senses for a moment.
She had no words for this. All she wanted was to share this incredible news with Spencer immediately. She hoped that he would be with her as they anticipated the twins' birth.
As Sara walked out of the ultrasound room, she had her result in hand and walked back to the doctor in charge of her pregnancy.
He was also very happy for her. "Twins, huh? I did think that your belly was just a little bigger than the others, but you have such a small frame that I didn't think about twins at all.
"You'll have to keep up with your nutrition from this point on. It's tough being a mother, and your journey is slightly harder because you have twins. Where's your husband? Have him come with you during your next check-up."
"Okay. I appreciate your concern, doc, but he's very busy," Sara said.
"That's no excuse. He has to make time for something this important." The doctor couldn't stand men who always claimed to be busy when their wives were pregnant.
"I'll make sure he comes with me next time," Sara responded. It sounded like she was making a promise to the doctor, but she was actually saying it to herself.
