Teresa's phone rang at the perfect time, and she felt a wave of relief.
She didn't know what Gary had been about to say, but she could guess his intentions. He had been her senior at school, but no one would take someone else's side without reason. Some things were better left unsaid.
Glancing down, she saw Allen's name on the screen. She didn't answer—Gary's driver had just pulled up. "Get in, Gary. Send me a text once you're home," she said.
Gary hesitated, his eyes lingering on her. On second thought, it wasn't the right time to speak. He swallowed his words.
So many years had passed, yet he still remembered the moment he had fallen in love at first sight with Teresa.
Sliding into the back seat, he said gently, "Go home and get some rest."
Teresa nodded. "You too."
Gary smiled softly. "Alright."
She watched the car disappear down the street before turning back toward the Sutton residence.
