5 PROMISES IN THE SHADOW

KAREN'S POV I smiled and checked the note in it. “I have a very sharp memory of taking details in. Your figures registered in my brain the day we met at the mall. I told the lady in charge of your stature and she recommended them all. I hope it fits!” I went back to check the last bag. It was quite light. I opened it and revealed it's content. It had a red rose in it, a ticket, and some gold and silver jewelry. I squealed in delight. It was not like I could not afford them, but having someone buy them for me made me feel super special. It had a note also, longer than others. I sat on the couch and took my time to read it, noting the important points. “I know it is a bit weird to start our friendship this way. Although I just met you a few days back, I can't help but think about you. I know it's too early to start boring you with my family history. But, I'll shorten it, so you'll understand my urgency. I am the only child of my parents and old enough to marry. I just broke up with my ex-girlfriend a few weeks back. She's a popular actress and I'm sure you must have seen her once or twice. I broke up with her because I could no longer keep up with her terrible attitude. I am ready to settle and the moment I spotted you at the mall, I knew you were the one I want for the rest of my life. Truly, we are still strangers, but I believe with time, we'll no longer be strangers. I am terrible with words, so I'm probably not making any sense. But, what I want you to know is that, I think you're an interesting person. And, there's nothing more that I want than to spend the reminders of my life with you. However, staring on a foundation is best, I guess. I'll really love to be friends with you and take you home to see my parents, one day. I am not trying to buy you with my money, far from it. I know you are an established and independent lady, but this is my own way of saying I am sorry. If you consider my apology and would like to be my friend, would you please dress up in one of the gowns? Let me take you for dinner? Just to get to know you more.” I read the note once more before I made up my mind to call him up. His line rang twice, but it was not answered. I decided to hold on for a while before calling his line again. I was about to rise from the couch when my doorbell rang. I wasn't expecting any visitors, so I wondered who could be at the door. I walked to the door and peeped through the hole. It was Max waiting impatiently, walking back and forth. I initially wanted to ignore him and see his reaction, but I had a rethink and opened the door for him. “Jesus! What were you thinking? Thank God you are safe.” He said and took me in a bear hug. “Uhm, easy, easy. Else, you'll break my bones again.” I said into his neck. “Oh, sorry. Why did you leave the hospital?” He questioned “ I believe I am old enough to make my own decisions. There was no point in staying there. I can take care of myself.” “But, you have to stop by everyday to get checked. Promise?” “Yeah, sure. I promise. And, thanks for this. I just finished opening them.” I said and pointed to the mess I had created on the floor. “Hope you love them all?” “Yes, I do. They are all nice. Thanks a bunch. I was not expecting it. Caught me by surprise.” “Cool. I am glad you love it. I am sorry I had to write down my thoughts, instead of telling you. That's just how I feel about you.” “Hmm. What if your parents don't agree with us? What will you do?” “I can convince them. They have no other choice than to listen. Unless they want me to marry a whore.” “So, how's your friend? The one you went to check?” I asked, changing the topic. “Doing great, now. Thanks for asking. Karen, will you please be my girlfriend? I promise to bring the world to your feet. There's nothing you want that I won't do.” “Max, we just met like four days ago. Let's get to know each other first. Then, we can talk about dating.” I insisted. “Alright. I won't rush you. Take your time, baby girl. I want to have you at the right time. Who knows maybe we are destined to be together forever.” He whispered. “Well. Who knows.” “Can we have dinner this weekend? I already told you about it when we met at the mall. But, this is more official now.” “I do not mind going out with you. Just to get to know you. Friday night, it's a date.” I said and made the biggest mistake of my life by agreeing to his proposal. Before the dinner, Max took out shopping. He had been planning it since we met. He took me out on a shopping spree to get my wardrobe filled. He had made a list of all the places we would visit and had planned out our route so that we could hit all the stores he wanted me to visit. As we walked through the mall, I couldn’t help but feel giddy with excitement. I started at my favourite store, a trendy boutique that always had the latest styles. I found a cute crop top and high-waisted jeans while Max found a flowy maxi dress for me. He wanted me to try the two outfits and he agreed that they looked great. Next up was a department store, where we browsed through the aisles of clothing and shoes. This time, I was the first to find a pair of black ankle boots that I knew would go with everything in my wardrobe. I also fell in love with a pair of strappy sandals that would be perfect for summer. I picked it, since I loved flat shoes. Max also picked up on some basics, like t-shirts and socks, before moving on to the next. At a cosmetics store, I sampled different shades of lipstick and blush before settling for a nude color. That weekend, we went for dinner and had a beautiful moment together. We shared our dreams, goals and ambitions. He was not kidding when he said he knew a nice restaurant with the perfect spot. I had the best steak in years that night. I also drank the best wine there. Max felt like the last good person on Earth as we spoke that night. I felt like the luckiest person. I never knew I was about to delve into something bigger than me.
