Caroline's eyes widened in disbelief. A wave of joy rushed through her before she quickly calmed herself down. "Help me keep this a secret for now," she said as she tugged on Eleanor's arm. Eleanor assumed that Caroline had wanted to surprise her family with the good news. So, she agreed to her request. After the banquet was over, David gave Caroline a ride home. After mulling it over, she ultimately decided to share the news with him. David supported her, and he agreed to wait until she had completed her education before getting married. Upon hearing this, she was finally able to relax. Caroline still hadn't figured out what to do next. Their engagement had only just been announced. So, calling it off now would definitely make both of their families look bad—especially since the Sawyers were the ones who had suggested it in the first place.
