Callie pressed her lips together, her smile fading. “I know what you mean, but no, absolutely not. The only reason I’m still here today is because of the contract with him. One hundred days. Once Jaquan’s issue is resolved, I’ll take the child and leave immediately.” Joaquin studied her carefully. “I’m just worried you still have lingering feelings, ones you haven’t even realized yourself.” His words hit a nerve. Callie froze for a moment, then shook her head firmly. “Impossible.” Joaquin said nothing. “It’s just an act,” she added, her voice low and serious. She sounded resolute. Only then did Joaquin nod, though he hesitated before speaking again. “Nelson is a calculating man, full of schemes. Don’t let him use you. Whatever you do, don’t fall for him.” Someone at the dining table called for them. Callie nodded. “I know. Let’s go eat.” As they stepped into the light, they saw Nelson descending the staircase. Callie’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t tell if he had overheard
