Callie didn’t want to admit it. “I wasn’t always that dramatic.”
“Weren’t you? You used to yell for cake every day after school. Once, when the shop ran out, you refused to eat dinner and ended up with a stomachache so bad you were hospitalized,” Nelson recounted calmly, his memory of the past crystal clear.
Callie remembered too. She sighed, a little helpless. “That was an exception.”
She recalled how, even after being admitted to the hospital, she had remained upset. Neither Ahmad nor Sienna could cheer her up. It was Nelson who, before dawn, ran to the cake shop and waited for it to open, clutching a handful of cash and declaring he wanted to buy ten cakes.
The shop assistant had been thoroughly amused.
And Callie? She had been pacified. She smiled brightly that day. “Nelson understands me. None of you do.”
Ahmad had chimed in from the side, “Oh, so Nelson understands you the most, huh? Why don’t you marry him when you grow up?”
