The driver glanced at Emilia’s pale face and spoke cautiously, “Mrs. Hayes, maybe Mr. Hayes just dropped a colleague off at the hospital. Try not to overthink it.”
Yeah right, as if that wasn’t just a poor cover-up.
Emilia gave a faint smile. “That's what I figured too. Could you take me home now?”
It was past ten at night when Dominic finally walked through the door.
The maid offered to prepare dinner, but he waved her off. “I’ve already eaten.”
He asked about Emilia. The maid replied, “Miss Hart seemed tired after dinner and went up to bed early.”
“Okay.”
Not wanting to disturb her, Dominic didn’t turn on the light when he stepped into the bedroom. He tiptoed into the bathroom, dried his hair, then gently lifted the blanket to get in. Just as his hand brushed against Emilia’s waist, she slapped it away.
Her voice was low and weary. “I’m not feeling well. Go sleep in the guest room.”
