Chapter 6 Drafting the Divorce Agreement
Rachel looked confused. "Why not tell him? If you're worried he'll give you trouble, I'll handle him."
Catherine shook her head wearily. "Rachel, I want a divorce."
She was the only one who had ever been trapped in this marriage. She didn't want to continue anymore.
Rachel fell silent for a moment. "Have you thought this through?"
She understood that for Catherine to say this, she must have given it serious consideration. No one could persevere in a loveless marriage forever.
"Yes, I've thought it through." Catherine touched her stomach. "I hope you can keep the baby a secret for me."
Rachel sighed. Despite feeling reluctant, she chose to respect Catherine's decision. "Don't worry. Even if you two get divorced, I'll still consider you my daughter."
Catherine said gratefully, "Thank you, Rachel."
Rachel stroked Catherine's head. "Don't worry about your family's situation. I'll handle everything. You just focus on having the baby safely."
Catherine nodded. The baby was an accident. The fact that Harry always used protection clearly showed he didn't want children with her. So she had no intention of letting him know about the baby.
That afternoon, Catherine took time off and met with a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement. She then dialed Harry's number. The phone rang for a long time without being answered until it finally disconnected.
She patiently called again. This time, the call went through.
Harry's impatient voice came through. "What is it?"
"I want to talk to you about..."
Before Catherine could finish, she heard Michelle's voice interrupting. "Harry, should we go here next for vacation? Hey, who are you talking to?"
"No one important." Harry hung up.
Catherine listened to the dial tone, and an indescribable bitterness rose in her heart. So she was unimportant.
When she tried calling again, it wouldn't go through. Catherine typed out a text message, but as she was about to send it, she looked up and saw a man outside the window helping his pregnant wife. He was carrying newborn supplies in his hand.
Her child would be born without a father. She stared blankly at the couple walking away, then her gaze fell to her own stomach. She realized her child would never have those things.
The message remained on her screen, but Catherine couldn't bring herself to send it. Even now, she still couldn't let Harry go.
Harry never replied to her messages. Eventually, she had gradually stopped sending them. The last time she had messaged him was two months ago.
Catherine closed her eyes and sent the message. She watched as it showed only one gray checkmark instead of the usual two blue ones.
Catherine was stunned. She realized he had blocked her on WhatsApp. Fine, she would wait until he came home to talk.
But several days passed, and Harry never came home. She could only see Harry through Michelle's social media posts. Catherine put down her phone and looked at the design proposal that was half-finished on her screen.
Cecilia walked over irritably. "Ms. Quinn, she's doing this on purpose. She makes us redo everything every time!"
They'd been rewriting the proposal endlessly. Every time they made a little progress, Michelle would point out what was wrong and what needed to be changed. It was impossible to move forward with the proposal.
"Well, she is the paying client." Catherine sighed.
Michelle was really making her life hell. She could find time to cause trouble even while she was away traveling with Harry.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Michelle in the group chat, saying she suddenly felt this idea wouldn't work and wanted them to scrap everything and start over again. Cecilia was nearly driven crazy by the proposal revisions. When she saw this message, something inside her broke.
She cursed angrily. "Even if they're the client, they can't just mess around like this! Aren't they afraid she'll ruin this project?"
Catherine thought that with Harry backing Michelle, one project was nothing to them. It was just Harry's way of keeping his girlfriend happy.
Catherine comforted Cecilia, then received a call from her boss in the middle of it, asking her to come to a meeting. After the meeting ended, Catherine looked somewhat dazed.
They had blamed her in the meeting, asking if she had offended Michelle, and told her to please Michelle and close the Bluebay deal quickly. Otherwise, if this dragged on, it would be bad for their company.
Without the Bluebay project payment, their company would go bankrupt. All their upfront bidding funds had been spent on this, and the executives were even more anxious than she was.
Bluebay didn't need their partnership, but if they didn't seize this opportunity, plenty of others would want it. The message was clear. She had to solve the Michelle problem and secure the Bluebay project.
Catherine's head throbbed as she absentmindedly returned home. She poured herself a glass of water and had just taken a sip when she heard the sound of the front door opening.
