Charlotte reached out and touched Kayden's head. The temperature was so hot it was alarming. She pulled her hand back, opened her medical kit, and used a thermometer to check Kayden's temperature. It was over 102.2°F! "He's burning up this badly!" She quickly gave Kayden an injection and started the fever-reducing treatment. She then tried to wake him up. "Kayden, wake up and take your medicine, okay?" Kayden's face was flushed from the fever, and he looked weak and limp, lacking energy. When he heard the familiar voice, he groggily opened his eyes. When he saw Charlotte, he suddenly pouted and called out to her, "Mommy..." Charlotte froze for a moment, about to explain that she wasn't his mother. But Kayden snuggled his entire head into her arms, his eyes red and glassy as he whimpered softly, "Mommy... I want Mommy to hold me..." Charlotte's heart softened as she looked at him. The way Kayden was acting now was similar to when Amber was sick. She'd want to cling to her and have
