Amber tilted her head, full of curiosity. "Why is the kitty so calm with you? When I try to hold it, it keeps meowing and runs away."
Brian raised an eyebrow, gently scratching the kitten's head. "Stray cats tend to be a bit wild. It probably sees you as too little to trust yet. It gets a bit cautious with adults and doesn't dare run."
"Oh…" she mumbled, pouting. "But I've been feeding her snacks!"
Brian could imagine the pout on her face. His tone softened. "Earning a cat's trust takes more than food. Come here—I'll show you how to get close to her. Next time, she won't run when you try to hold her."
"Really?" she asked, her tone filled with doubt.
Although she'd promised to stay away from Charlotte's awful ex-husband, the kitten was just too adorable. She couldn't resist and scooted over.
Her soft little body leaned against Brian's arm as she asked curiously, "So, what do I do?"
He held out a hand. "Give me your hand."
