Children were grouped by age and program level, with the gifted program students competing in their own bracket. I watched as Troy, Lake, Soren, and Kyle huddled together, their heads bent in serious discussion about strategy.
"They're taking this very seriously," I observed to David, who had positioned himself beside me along the parent sideline.
"Oh, they absolutely are," he confirmed. "Last year, Kyle's team came in second place and he was devastated. He's been preparing for this rematch all year."
The first event was indeed a Rubik's cube competition, and I felt a surge of pride watching my boys approach the table with confidence. The rules were simple: the children would compete first in individual speed-solving rounds, then the top four teams would advance to compete against their parents in a relay format.
