On the way back from Ricardo’s boutique, I pretended not to have heard what he said to Logan.
I didn’t want to think about it. I didn’t want to accept the fact that Logan’s mother—just like Sebastian’s world—would never truly accept someone like me. A divorced woman. A mother. A former nanny.
Maybe I had always been that—a passing person in their fancy lives. Someone useful, but never permanent.
“Haley,” Logan said gently from the passenger seat. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I replied, staring out the window.
He didn’t ask more. Maybe he knew I wasn’t ready to talk. Maybe he had his own thoughts to deal with.
When we got home, Lily bounced into the living room with her sparkly hair clips still on, humming the tune Ricardo had played on the speakers earlier. I kissed her forehead and hugged her tightly.
Logan stood nearby, watching us with quiet eyes. I could feel his gaze, heavy and searching, but I didn’t meet it.
Then, my phone buzzed.
Mom.
I hesitated before answering. “Hello?”
