The cold night air felt heavy around us.
Lily stood frozen by the glass doors, her small hands shaking slightly. Her toy bear, the one she carried everywhere, slipped from her grasp and fell to the floor with a soft thud.
She looked at Logan with wide eyes.
“Daddy…” she said quietly, her voice trembling, “is that lady really my mom? Did my mom come back?”
Logan looked like he had been hit in the chest. His lips parted, but no sound came out. He took a step forward, then stopped. His hands were trembling.
“I—” he began.
But I stepped in.
“Lily,” I said gently, kneeling down and pulling her into a hug. “Come here, sweet girl.”
She came into my arms easily, still staring at Logan over my shoulder. I brushed her hair gently, heart pounding.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she whispered into my neck. “I thought… I thought she didn’t want me.”
My chest ached at her words.
I looked up at Logan, and he was clearly struggling. Pain flickered across his face. He bent down next to me.
