Marcus set the bug aside and suddenly switched topics. "You did okay today. If there's something you want, just say it."
As soon as Elaine heard that, she wasn't going to hold back anymore. She pushed aside her earlier guilt and seized the chance to ask for credit. "Didn't you say if I impressed you over these three days, you'd return Oliver's laptop?"
Marcus glanced at her, voice flat. "Seems like it hasn't been three days yet."
Elaine counted on her fingers. "But if you include today, that's day three."
"Still doesn't count." Marcus's tone left no room for discussion.
With that negotiation dead in the water, Elaine decided to drop it and just forced a polite smile.
At least Marcus was decent enough to let her go home early. Honestly, calling her in today seemed like it was just to show her the bug.
Elaine had a hard time flagging down a cab, finally making it back feeling complet
