"I just came to meet up with a friend," Elaine said, looking a bit wronged. "You've never come to this kind of place before for a 'meet-up,'" Marcus narrowed his cool, deep eyes at her, voice sharp as a knife. "You've always cared about your image—you know exactly which places are okay and which aren't." The smile on Elaine's face froze halfway up, hanging awkwardly at the corner of her lips. She quickly owned up, "I'll be more careful next time." She really hadn't thought this through. She knew Audrey had always avoided bars and places like this, but she just walked right into one without a second thought. And then there's Claire—no way that woman's clean. Everything about her screams manipulation. How could Audrey trust someone like that? If Audrey were a schemer too, maybe it would make sense.
