Chapter 663
Clara was understanding and kind. While Maeve, worn down by daily torment, had become increasingly sensitive and suspicious.
One evening after their wedding, Maeve prepared a spread, hoping to share a meal with him. Sergio was moved when he saw the burns on Maeve's hands from cooking.
Overcome by emotion, he was intimate with Maeve that night. But later, he became furious as he had never expected Maeve to be the kind of woman who would drug him.
The next day, however, he realized the drugging had nothing to do with Maeve—it was Hailey who had done it.
Despite knowing this, Sergio chose to stay silent. Yet, his attitude toward Maeve grew colder. He wasn't good with words and didn't know how to face Maeve, whom he had misunderstood.
As Maeve lived alone, Sergio couldn't miss the loneliness in her eyes. But whenever she saw him, she would force a smile and ask him what he wanted for dinner.
It dawned on him then that he had been avoiding this marriage for four years and had never once sat down for a peaceful meal with Maeve.
He had assumed Maeve was only interested in gaining benefits from the Brooks family and ignored her deep feelings for him.
So when Maeve wasn't around, he left a ring on her bedroom table, hoping she would understand his message.
Soon, the Brooks Group was about to bid on a significant piece of land, and Clara, being close to the wife of the opposing company's CEO, had to attend a social event with him.
At the same time, Maeve found out she was pregnant. Maeve grew increasingly afraid to talk to him, likely due to the rumors about him and Clara.
Back then, Sergio trusted Clara completely and asked her to explain everything to Maeve. Clara complied without hesitation.
He had always trusted Clara, the subordinate he had personally trained, so he entrusted her with the entire matter.
But after the two companies signed a cooperation agreement, he discovered Clara hadn't cleared things up with Maeve.
Instead, Clara had gotten involved in shady dealings and was entangled with several company shareholders. Clara had even grown close to Hailey without his knowledge.
Worried about the shareholders who supported Clara, Sergio knew he had to find a way to stabilize the situation and remove Clara from Brooks Group.
But before doing so, he needed to distance himself from Maeve to convince Clara that Maeve was unimportant to him. Otherwise, Clara might use Hailey to harm Maeve.
"Is she dead yet? Call me when she is."
A cold voice seemed to jolt Sergio awake. He couldn't believe they had come from his own mouth. In reality, Clara was standing in front of his office, smiling faintly on the other end of the phone.
"Sergio, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, just the usual drama," he replied impatiently and put his phone aside.
Over the years, Maeve had tried several times to get his attention, especially after getting pregnant. But she had gone too far this time, and he didn't take it seriously.
After all, Brooks Group had invested heavily in the Evergreen hospital, ensuring Maeve's child's safety with ample medical equipment and a steady supply of type A blood.
There was no way that such an emergency could have occurred.
It was Clara... Clara was the mastermind.
Sergio felt as if an invisible hand had pulled him out of a dream. He woke up on the hospital bed, and his eyes turned cold and dark.
"Mr. Brooks, you should rest. I've learned that Zion and Charlie are in Yewridge. Ms. Scott will be fine." Larry's voice sounded beside him.
The smell of disinfectant in the hospital reminded Sergio of Maeve, who had died from excessive bleeding on the operating table.
He finally understood why Maeve was so afraid of him.
