Chapter 699
Maeve watched Clara bow deeply in front of her without a word.
Clara felt a sharp ache in her back from holding the position, but she couldn't lift her head without an answer from Maeve.
At that moment, resentment simmered in her heart.
"I'm not that heartless, too," Maeve finally said.
"I just hope you can keep your mouth shut and stop making unfounded assumptions about others, Ms. Ramoz. That way, you won't embarrass the Brooks family, right?"
As she spoke, she cast a pointed glance at Hailey, who had thoroughly humiliated herself that evening.
Tomorrow, the three socialites nearby would surely spread the word about what had transpired tonight.
The granddaughter-in-law of the Brooks family had bowed in apology to the granddaughter-in-law of the Spencer family—Everyone in Seathburn would have known which family was in control now.
Already mortified, Hailey couldn't stand to be there a moment longer. She shot a glare at Sergio and snapped, "Take her and get home right now!"
"Yes, Grandma," Sergio replied.
He walked over to Clara and took her hand. Meanwhile, Clara felt utterly wronged and began to tear up.
Maeve found the scene almost amusing as she caught the flicker of concern in Sergio's eyes.
As the crowd dispersed, Zayla noticed Bryce struggling to find the right words to ask Maeve about the engagement.
She quickly stepped in. "You've been through a lot these past few days. Let me take you home. Helen is worried about you."
"Okay," Bryce said. He glanced at Maeve but ultimately held back his question.
Once everyone had left, Maeve turned to Zion. "Didn't we agree that I would come alone to pick up Bryce? Why did you follow me?"
"I was worried it wasn't safe for you," Zion replied. He raised an eyebrow. "Turns out I was right to come."
Maeve had long since grown accustomed to Zion's unwavering confidence.
She glanced at Sergio escorting Clara to the car and said, "Don't you think Sergio's acting a bit strange?"
When Sergio first met her, he had said something…
"Yeah, he is. I heard that since returning from the island, Sergio accidentally ingested some drug and his memory has been a little off."
"Amnesia?" Maeve couldn't believe such an old trope could apply to Sergio.
"Whether it's real or just an act, I won't let anyone bully you," Zion said.
He held Maeve's hand firmly. "Let's go home. There's a good show waiting for you tomorrow."
"Really?" Maeve was still trying to process when Zion swiftly changed the subject. "What do you want for dinner?"
"What kind of show are you talking about? Come on, tell me!"
"It's a secret."
"Zion!"
…
The next morning, Maeve was jolted awake by the doorbell.
Groggily, she climbed out of bed and opened the door to find Charlie and Lyra each carrying large suitcases. Maeve stared at them in surprise.
"What… are you two doing here?"
"Oh, Zion asked us to bring these over early," Charlie explained. "He's off getting ready."
"Getting ready?" Maeve was puzzled. What kind of occasion required all this preparation?
"Stop standing there and help us bring everything in!" Charlie urged.
