Alexander said, "Mrs. Pierson, I'm sure you remember what you did earlier. Since there's a press conference tomorrow, the stage is all yours."
He looked at Matilda's pale face and chuckled. "Relax," he continued, handing her a tissue. "Wipe off that sweat."
She didn't dare take it. The calmer Alexander sounded, the more her heart pounded with anxiety.
Frank frantically signaled Matilda with his eyes before she finally dared accept the tissue. Her trembling hands clutched it, and it immediately became damp and sticky. She hadn't realized how much her palms were sweating.
"Speak nicely. If you satisfy me, I'll go easy on the fireworks," Alexander warned in that measured tone that made people's blood run cold.
He pulled out a wet wipe, cleaned his hands, and tossed it aside. It landed right on the diary pages.
"One more thing. Pick those up," he ordered.
The diary pages were scattered all over the coffee shop, with some still in other people's hands.
