Maurice and Matteo did not get along with each other. When Mila had first met Matteo, his relationship with his father had been at its worst point. Maurice wanted Matteo to manage the family fortune, while the latter insisted on starting his own business. Caroline said that the two of them had argued so intensely that they'd smashed up the study, destroying several expensive antiques. The argument had ended with Matteo slamming the door and storming off. Maurice had announced publicly that he did not want anyone to help Royal Investment, either on his or the Hall family's account. As a result, things had been very difficult for Royal Investment for the first two years. Although Matteo was the Hall family's only successor, it didn't give him an advantage at all. Maurice and Matteo's relationship had only improved slightly over the past few years due to Mila's mediation. Maurice hadn't liked Mila at first, either. He had often spoken curtly to her or just treated her coldly.
