Penelope said into the awkward silence, "Forget it, Matt. Maybe we've really accused Ms. Wright wrongly, which is why she's so angry. Either way, she's been your secretary for so many years, and you chose not to run a technical appraisal because you trusted her. At this point, the truth really doesn't matter anymore. We should just leave it be."
Mila looked at her. For the very first time, she saw how evil some people could be.
It was a brilliant move. On the surface, it looked as if Penelope was helping her out, yet every word she spoke had hidden implications behind them.
Matteo took the cue and backed down. "Fine. This ends here. Nobody is to bring it up again."
He never said a single word in Mila's defense.
That spoke volumes about his stance.
Mila felt as if something had been torn apart inside her, so painful it seemed to wrench at her very organs.
She lost the energy to pursue the truth.
Explaining was futile, anyway. Matteo had already pronounced her guilty in his heart
