However, no matter how fluent Samuel was in Kaubretian, the police ignored him.
That was because it was Julie who called them.

That was why the police of Kaubreta were particularly vigilant when faced with disputes between couples.
They rarely accepted the dominant party's explanations at face value. Instead, they would seek out the more vulnerable to hear her side of the story first.
"Hello, ma'am." A female officer walked up to Julie and asked gently, "Is what that man said true? Is he your husband? Did he hurt you?
"Please be honest with me if he's harmed you in any way. We'll protect you."
"That's right, Julie. Tell her I'm your husband." Samuel looked expectantly at Julie. "We're husband and wife. We're a family. Connor is the outsider here!"
Samuel was hopeful. He was certain that Julie would explain everything to the police.
