Chapter 112 My Call to Go
"I…" Owen's voice came out raspy, and his cloudy eyes burned with the will to live. It was unmistakable—so clear that it lodged in Lila's mind.
Neither needed another word spoken. They were already on the same page.
Lila pressed the call button by the bed. A nurse's aide stepped in a moment later.
"Excuse me, could you grab us a wheelchair? I'd like to take Mr. Carter Senior downstairs to get some air," Lila said.
The nurse's aide looked uneasy, glancing from Owen to Lila. "Well… His family just told us that no one's allowed to take him out—"
Owen nodded at the nurse's aide. "It's my call to go."
Eventually, they eased him into a wheelchair and rolled him out of the room to the nursing home courtyard.
The warm afternoon sun washed over him, chasing off the chill that had settled in due to his long time in bed.
Owen pulled in deep, greedy breaths that smelled like fresh grass, and he looked a little more alive.
