Chapter 8
Over the next few days, Caesar acted like he was deliberately trying to spite Josephine. He made sure his actions were high-profile. He seemed to want to prove something.
One day, he took Nadia to try on wedding gowns. As she emerged from the fitting room after putting one on, she saw him glaring in a different direction. She followed his line of sight to see Josephine approaching the store with her arm in another man's. They looked intimate and affectionate.
She looked calm and composed when she saw Caesar and Nadia. It was as if she and Caesar had never fallen out. She even greeted them. "My and Sebastian's wedding is next Wednesday. You two are more than welcome to join us…"
She paused. Then, seemingly remembering something, she continued, "Oh, right. I almost forgot that your wedding is on that day, too. What a pity."
Caesar's expression grew increasingly hideous at her words. He didn't respond, but his gaze remained fixed on her.
Just then, a store clerk approached to attend to Josephine and Sebastian. They left with her.
As soon as Josephine pointed at a gown, wanting to ask the store clerk to get it for her, a voice rang out from behind. "Get that for Nadia to try on."
Another store clerk quickly did so. Josephine faltered and turned to look at Caesar. She saw the spite in his eyes.
Nadia watched as Caesar claimed every gown Josephine liked and stuffed it into her hands. Josephine could no longer keep her smile in place when Nadia was surrounded by wedding gowns.
The tension became palpable. Fortunately, Sebastian spoke up to break it. "I have another wedding gown store under my name, Josie. It's a little smaller than this one, but at least there won't be anyone to disturb us there. You can always let me know if you're unhappy with anything—I'll get someone to fix it."
Josephine looked slightly pacified at that. She linked arms with him and gave Caesar a smug look. "Let's head over there right now, then!"
Caesar watched as they left. He'd won the fight but didn't feel happy about it at all. He wasn't even interested in continuing to pick out a wedding gown.
Nadia acted like she knew nothing. She grabbed one of the wedding gowns around her and headed into the fitting room. After a few rounds of this, Caesar lost his patience.
"Let's just take this one." He pointed at one carelessly. "I've had enough of this."
He looked down at his phone to check the time, wanting to head home. However, as soon as he unlocked his phone, he saw a push notification on a trending topic.
"The princess of Jeriton City spares no expense for love! She lavishly books a large screen in the city center to play her and her fiancé's pre-wedding video on loop!"
His expression changed drastically, and he shot to his feet. He strode out of the store. He forgot that Nadia was still in the fitting room.
By the time Nadia exited the fitting room after changing, Caesar was nowhere to be seen. She was about to call him when she, too, saw the trending topic.
She already had her answer. She sighed and hailed a cab to head to the city center. When she got there, the roads were congested, and the crowd was cheering. They seemed to be snatching something.
Nadia pushed her way through the crowd. That was when she saw that Caesar was giving out money. He cried, "Next Wednesday is my wedding with Nadia Creswell! I'm in a great mood today, so I want everyone to share my joy!"
Soon, however, a limousine dashed toward them and pulled over. A distinguished, middle-aged man stormed over to Caesar under the protection of his bodyguards.
It was Philip Gray, Caesar's father.
The spectators' cheers gradually died down due to his presence. Philip looked grim, and he exuded frostiness.
He snapped, "Haven't you caused enough trouble, Caesar? I don't care who you marry, but the woman has to sign a premarital agreement before becoming a member of the Gray family.
"She won't get a single cent if you two ever get divorced. Even without the divorce, the Gray family's fortune won't have anything to do with her!"
Silence descended upon the crowd at Philip's words. No one had expected him to say that, including Caesar. He subconsciously glanced at Josephine, but she merely stood there without saying a word.
Then, Nadia's voice rang out. She sounded determined as she said, "I'll sign the agreement!"
She emerged from the crowd and took the premarital agreement that a bodyguard held out. She signed it resolutely before smiling at Caesar. "I told you long ago that I only want to marry and have a wedding with you. I don't need everything else."
He stared at her in disbelief, but she merely continued smiling. Anyone who saw this would think she was head over heels for him.
Only she knew that her mission would be complete once the wedding was over. That was when she would leave this place.
Nothing in this world meant anything to her. From beginning to end, all she wanted was to revive Theodore.
