Chapter 5
My soul hovered in mid-air. I watched from above as everyone in the doorway froze.
Oscar stumbled over, almost falling as he lunged toward me. His hands quaked as he tried to stem the blood from my bleeding wrist.
His face had gone deathly pale. His words were a strained, broken plea as he choked out, "Carol… Please don't scare me like this… A doctor! We need a doctor now!"
The wound on his leg tore open from the sudden strain, yet he seemed unaware of the pain. Instead, he stared at Martin with a look of utter desperation.
Then, Martin finally came to, his voice shredded with panic as he shouted at housekeepers in the hallway. "Get the family doctor up here now! He has to stop Carol's bleeding!"
The doctor stumbled in. He wrapped a thick gauze around my wrist, yet the blood soaked through almost immediately.
At that, sweat beaded on the doctor's forehead. He reached out and felt for a pulse at my neck, hesitating before he said, "Mr. Bergling, I'm afraid she's…"
