Jeremy's heart suddenly skipped a beat, and his fists clenched without thinking.
He found a handwritten letter underneath after brushing aside the resignation letter on top.
"Jeremy, by the time you read this, it'll be the day I've finally walked away from you. I've liked you since I started college, but I knew your heart belonged to Tricia, so I kept my feelings buried.
"Three years ago, when Tricia went overseas, I heard you went drinking at a bar. I was worried you'd get into trouble, so I went to look for you. I didn't drug you. Yes, I liked you, but I would never stoop to that.
"I thought maybe I could change your heart. But I was wrong. You've only ever loved Tricia. So now, I'm letting you go. From this day on, let's never cross paths again."
The date at the bottom was from three months ago.
