Chapter 10
Ignoring Sophia's struggle and pleas, Lucas forcefully took 400cc of blood from her.
Once Eva' life was barely stabilized, the two cars sped toward the hospital.
Inside, the doctors and nurses were already on standby. As soon as they arrived, Eva was rushed to the emergency room and Sophia was wheeled into a regular ward.
In the past, Sophia could fool herself into thinking Lucas only cared about Eva out of guilt and duty. But now… it probably wasn't just that.
It had to be love, right?
She was clearly the outsider here.
"We can't treat Miss Walters' injuries with what we have… The only shot is if Dr. Bennett tries the surgery," the doctor said hesitantly, pulling off his gloves after stepping out of the ER, looking straight at Lucas.
Let Mark try the surgery?
So that meant... Sophia was about to be used as a test subject?
A chill of terror crawled over her skin like a net. She wanted to run, but her legs wouldn't move.
Rebecca grabbed Lucas' arm, her voice sharp and shaking, "It's that bitch Sophia's fault! It's her! Lucas, my girl's suffered so much, finally started to bounce back, you have to save her!"
Despite how much he hated Sophia, Lucas didn't really want her dead.
"Mark, how risky would the procedure be?"
"Well, Mr. Bennett, under normal conditions, Mrs. Bennett would have about a fifty percent survival rate. But considering she's injured, weak from blood loss, and also pregnant… The odds drop to around ten percent. Of course, if we don't go through with it, Miss Walters also only has about a ten percent chance."
"Can't we just operate on Eva directly?"
"No. I need certain drugs filtered through Mrs. Bennett's body first. Once processed, we can transmit them to Miss Walters. But before anything, we'd have to remove the fetus."
Lucas froze. His whole body went rigid.
He'd been pacing outside the ER, scared this exact moment would come.
But here it was.
He didn't know why that awful woman Sophia still made his heart twist. Why he still worried about her.
But this was her choice. She walked down this path herself. No turning back now—it's on her.
"Get the surgery ready!" he said through gritted teeth, his eyes landing on Sophia, who was being held back by bodyguards.
"Sophia, this is what you owe Eva!"
"You're seriously gonna do this? Throw me and the baby away like trash?" Sophia's eyes were burning red, but even as the tears pushed forward, they wouldn't fall.
"Lucas, I hate you. I hope you and Eva suffer till your dying breath!"
"Take her to the OR!" Lucas ordered coldly.
But then, Sophia suddenly gave a bitter laugh, shook the bodyguards off, and walked toward the operating room with her head high.
"From this moment on, we're done, Lucas. For good."
Lucas' fists tightened. For a second, the urge to stop her rushed through him. He opened his mouth—
But said nothing.
Five hours later, the OR doors finally opened.
Looking at the figure beneath the blanket, Lucas' mind went completely blank. The three-meter walk felt harder than anything he'd ever done.
An unfamiliar emptiness flooded his chest, heavy and cold.
"Lucas?" Despite her pale face, Eva managed a big smile at him. "Thank you."
"It's nothing," Lucas forced out the words, but his smile didn't reach his eyes.
Why… why wasn't he happy to see Eva alive? Why did his whole body feel like it was sinking?
"How's… the situation?" His voice trembled as he turned to the nurse.
"Don't worry, Mr. Bennett. The surgery was successful. Miss Walters' vitals are stable. She should be ready to go home in a few days."
"And my wife... Sophia?"
