Max’s Point of View
Marco’s words echoed in my mind, each syllable driving a nail of disbelief deeper into my chest. Eva saved me? It felt like the ground beneath me had shifted, leaving me unsteady and exposed. My fists clenched at my sides, and I stared at Marco, searching his face for any sign of deceit.
“Marco,” I began, my voice low and trembling, “you can’t just say something like that without proof. How do you know? How can you be so sure?”
Marco leaned against the edge of my desk, his expression serious. “Because I was there, Max. I saw her. I saw Eva pull you up from that lake with everything she had. She was crying, screaming your name. Sara showed up after the fact, but by then, Eva had already saved you.”
The room felt suffocating. My breath came in short, shallow gasps as the weight of his words pressed down on me. “No... no,” I muttered, shaking my head as if I could physically reject the truth. “Why didn’t she say anything? Why didn’t she defend herself?”
