I stood there, my heart still racing from Max's revelation. The atmosphere in the boardroom had shifted completely the hostile glares that had been directed at me just moments ago were replaced with looks of shame and regret. The massive mahogany table that had felt like a barrier between me and justice now seemed smaller, less threatening. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long shadows across the plush carpet, as if nature itself was witnessing this moment of truth.
Mr. Thompson, the eldest board member, cleared his throat and rose from his chair. His weathered face showed genuine remorse as he looked at me, his hands trembling slightly as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. "Miss Brown... Eva... we owe you the deepest apology."
