Emma shot Lillian a sideways glance, full of disdain. Her voice was cold, almost detached. “Cassandra literally can't talk right now, so whatever you want to say—save it for when she's better.”
“Miss James, Cassandra is my daughter. I don’t need your permission to speak to her. You're just an outsider. Get out. And don’t bother coming again,” Lillian snapped, her face darkening with frustration.

Emma let out a cold chuckle, turning to face her fully. She crossed her long legs, folded her arms, and tapped a finger against her arm with a lazy, smug look on her face.
“Oh? And when exactly did you become her mother again? She almost died and you didn’t even show up—now that she’s survived, you’re suddenly all in?” Her voice dipped, cold and sharp. “You're not here to hurt her, are you, Ms. Doyle?”
