"Miss Hughes, do you really not get what I'm saying?"
Lilah wasn't about to entertain Violet's sarcasm. She set her coffee cup down calmly, elegance on full display.
"I have no idea what you're on about. I dropped out of school and had a kid at eighteen—you and I aren't even on the same level when it comes to education," Violet shot back, clearly savoring the chance to get one over on Lilah.
"What's so bad about dropping out and raising a child? After all, I married a man so amazing, you'd need a flashlight to find his equal." Lilah smiled sweetly, then added, voice sharp, "You wanted to have a baby with someone like my husband, didn't you? Shame he's not into aging women who've lost their charm."
"What did you just say?!" Violet practically jumped to her feet, face flushed with fury.
