Chapter 50
After finishing breakfast together, Sandra took the car back to the old house.
Aiden was clearly reluctant to see her go—his eyes brimmed with tears.
Even though Gabriel had the day off, he still took Aiden to his early education class.
Once everyone left, only Lilah remained at home.
She sat alone on a bench under the shade of a tree in the garden, wearing a light blue dress with a flowing scarf tied around her neck. That quiet, composed look made her seem like she walked right off the cover of a youth magazine.
Holding her phone, she took a deep breath and sent a message to Damien: [I'll be coming to Alexander's birthday banquet.]
Once it was sent, she put the phone down and leaned back, lifting her head to watch the sunlight filter through the lush green leaves above like little stars.
A soft breeze brushed her cheeks, bringing with it the fresh scent of grass and morning dew.
Her mood seemed to lift out of nowhere. A gentle smile played across her face.
Then her phone buzzed twice.
