Celeste suddenly remembered that Ethan had been sent to the military when he was just a kid.
Sure, being the youngest major general in the Yannburgh Military District and the pride of Mr. Shaw sounded impressive-but thinking about a five-year-old being tossed into that world was kind of heartbreaking. No wonder he'd turned out so cold and distant.
"This dish is really good. You should eat more."
Celeste wasn't great at comforting people-not that she thought Ethan wanted that anyway-so she went with something simple, like putting food in his bowl to try and distract him.
"This is a one-time thing. Tomorrow, it's your turn," Ethan said.
"No way," Celeste leaned over the table, acting all pitiful. "You're so good at cooking, and I'm totally clueless. Why torture us both?"
"You can learn."
"I genuinely don't think I can."
Dinner dragged on, and in the end, Celeste gave a half-hearted promise to give cooking a shot. But talking and doing were two very different things.
