“What’s wrong?”
Ethan Shaw sat down beside her, gently holding her hand. “Did someone upset you?”
Celeste Harper shook her head slightly. After a brief pause, she asked, “How are things going with Grandpa’s funeral?”
She could feel his grip tighten a little at her words, his jaw visibly tense.
“The forensic report needs more time. The body has to stay at the lab for a few days,” he said, voice low.
“What about the funeral? Will it have to wait till the case is closed?”
“No. We can bring Grandpa out in three days at the latest. Mr. Foster’s already organizing it. It doesn’t need to be anything big—keep it simple.”
Ethan sounded drained, like his emotions were barely hanging in there.
Celeste felt a pang in her chest. “If I had gotten there a bit sooner... maybe this wouldn’t have happened.”
“It’s not your fault.”
Ethan let out a slow breath. “According to the forensics, the fatal injury wasn’t caused by the fruit knife. It’s the fall from the second floor that killed him.”
