Andrew Abbott let out a helpless shrug.
“Lillian’s not nearly as sharp as you think. She really thinks the kid is just someone Lady Davenport picked up because she couldn’t have one herself.”
Ethan Shaw narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, casting a glance into the banquet hall.
Lillian was dressed in a trendy avocado-green gown, chatting away with Mr. Davenport. Oddly enough, Lady Davenport, who never missed clinging to him at events, hadn’t shown up yet.
A moment later, he looked away and said in a low voice,
“If she doesn't know, maybe it's time we clued her in.”
Just then, Lady Davenport arrived, surrounded by a few overly friendly socialites hanging onto her every word. A maid followed, pushing a stroller with an adorable, fresh-faced kid inside—impossible not to notice.
Ethan and Andrew quickly stepped aside, heads slightly bowed, letting her pass respectfully.
