Chapter 6

Just then, a distinct ringtone went off. Heather fished out her phone, and her expression softened as soon as she saw the caller ID. It was her younger brother, Sirius Caldwell. After their parents passed away, Sirius was her only family and the only person who genuinely loved her. Unfortunately, in her previous life, she had been blinded by love; she had poured all her heart into Devon and neglected Sirius. "Siri," Heather answered immediately. A crisp, gentle teenage voice came through the line. "Heather, are you busy?" "Not at all. I'll pay you a visit in a bit." "Really?" The young man was delighted. Even his weak voice sounded livelier. "I'll wait for you then!" "Alright." After hanging up, she headed out. The onlookers in the corridor sized her up. "Did the sun rise in the west today? Heather actually wants a divorce?" "Back then, with Mrs. Harlan Senior's support, she forced Ms. Brightwood and Mr. Harlan to break up and even caused Ms. Brightwood to lose her baby. How could she possibly let him go now?" "This must be another one of her tricks! Even after getting married, she's still finding ways to hurt Ms. Brightwood." "I feel so bad for Mr. Harlan and Ms. Brightwood." The whispers grew louder and clearer, reaching Heather's ears. Her engagement to Devon had never been made public. Esme had taken advantage of that and crafted a deeply devoted persona for herself, publicly claiming to be Devon's first love. Heather, the lawful wife, was painted as the villain who had torn them apart. Devon had quietly fueled the rumors as well. Following the wedding, he rarely returned home, which only exacerbated the rumors. Consequently, Esme appeared in public with Devon, gaining everyone's sympathy and blessings. Meanwhile, Heather, the real victim, was labeled a shrew and constantly condemned by others. Heather stopped in her tracks and calmly swept her gaze across the onlookers. Those who met her eyes instinctively shut their mouths. After all, she had a reputation as a shrew. Heather resumed walking at a leisurely pace. There was no rush because she would pay Esme back for everything she had put her through in her previous life. … Micah stood before the window in the VIP ward on the same floor. His tall figure was straight and imposing. Even the sunlight seemed to favor him, gently spilling over his body and outlining his refined features, casting a long shadow on the floor. Beneath long lashes, he had a pair of starry eyes that made it impossible to look away. Micah was handsome enough to rival a work of art. Jonathan could not help but admire him inwardly. "There's very little information on Ms. Lovegood, Mr. Truman. This is all I could find. But…" He hesitantly handed the thin file to Micah. Before he could finish, the voices of two medical personnel echoed down the corridor. "What? Heather actually took the initiative to ask Mr. Harlan for a divorce?" "Yeah, she demanded it in public and even slapped him!" "Whoa, she's that ferocious and vicious? Why would she ever give up on a catch like Mr. Harlan?" "Who knows? Maybe she's found someone better…" "Seriously? Who's the poor guy this time?" "Mr. Truman…" Jonathan looked at Micah, the poor guy, with mixed feelings. "I'm almost done with the investigation, Mr. Truman. There's very little information about her before she turned 17. All I know is that she got married soon after university. But the internet is full of dirt on her. "The netizens claim she forced Devon's first love to lose her child and coerced Devon into marrying her. Esme was left with lasting health issues and has been recuperating in this hospital ever since, yet she keeps showing up here to stir up trouble. It was no wonder she dared to extort 500 million dollars from you; she's truly vicious!" "Oh? The netizens claim?" Micah reiterated, staring at Jonathan apathetically. Jonathan was so embarrassed he could barely breathe. "I…" Everyone who worked under Micah was among the best of the best and had all absorbed his long-standing approach—rigorous, precise, and grounded in facts rather than appearances. They verified everything, down to the smallest detail, and relied on solid evidence, not words like "claims" or "apparently". Jonathan wanted the ground to swallow him whole. At that moment, he felt utterly unworthy of standing in front of Micah. Micah glanced at the thin sheet of paper in the file. "That's all there is on an ordinary civilian?" There was no reproach in his tone, yet Jonathan wanted to slap himself. "I found it strange, too. That's all I could uncover…" He was a top graduate from a world-ranked university, yet he had only managed to dig up a single page. Just then, Micah's phone rang. It was a call from Zoey. "Why haven't you sent me a photo of my granddaughter-in-law, Micah?" His long fingers tapped lightly against the windowsill like a pianist's. His hand froze in midair when he heard that. "You don't have a granddaughter-in-law, Grandma." "I don't? But just yesterday, Jonathan told me that you were holding a young lady's hand…" "He was mistaken." Before she pressed further, Micah hung up the phone and glanced at Jonathan. "Transfer the 500 million dollars to her as soon as possible." "What about the contract marriage you mentioned before?" Jonathan probed after listening to Micah and Zoey's call. "Cancel it," Micah responded solemnly. "She's married. This arrangement would only ruin her reputation further." "Understood. I'll redo the investigation!" Jonathan couldn't help but admire his superior's character. Then, he put the single-page file away. "Should we head back to Baleigh this afternoon? Dr. Miller isn't with you. If you have another episode…" "No, we'll head back once we find the descendant of the miracle doctor." It was his grandfather, Michael Truman's, final wish. No matter what, he intended to fulfill it. "Have you found any leads yet?" Jonathan nodded. He had left Micah unattended yesterday to track down the miracle doctor's descendant. Hence, he couldn't return empty-handed. "I've dug deep. There hasn't been any renowned traditional medicine practitioner in Metrovale in recent years. However, there was an apothecary owner named Boreas Caldwell. His apothecaries were well-known and located throughout Metrovale. "Years ago, his second son, Notus Caldwell, died in an accident. Boreas was devastated and later passed away from an illness. His eldest son, Eurus Caldwell, is still in Metrovale. "He runs a small… hospital. So, he should be the descendant of the miracle doctor. I've arranged a visit this afternoon." "Alright. Let's go." … When Micah arrived at the Caldwell residence, Eurus came out to greet him with his wife, Bella Hanson. The couple wore obsequious smiles. After exchanging pleasantries, Eurus eagerly showed off his father, Boreas. "Mr. Truman, after years of research, I've developed several beauty and wellness formulas. They're guaranteed to take the world by storm and bring you enormous profits!" In short, he was implying that Micah should invest in his formulas. Micah studied the short, stocky man intently. "Are you really the descendant of the miracle doctor, Mr. Caldwell?" "Well, I…" Eurus panicked and broke out in a cold sweat under Micah's overwhelming presence. Bella mustered up her courage and raised her voice. "That's right. My husband is the only heir of the Grand Apothecary. My father-in-law passed everything down to him!" Micah arched his brow. "Oh? Including the Nine-Turn Needle Technique?" "O-Of course!" "Would it be possible for you to demonstrate it for me?" "Well…" Eurus stiffened and stammered, "T-The Nine-Turn Needle Technique is profound and requires full concentration, and I'm not feeling well today… Why don't you leave your contact information, and I'll demonstrate it for you another day, Mr. Truman?" "That works." The Nine-Turn Needle Technique was something Micah had invented on the spot. This man clearly wasn't the miracle doctor's descendant. Not wanting to waste any more time, Micah rose from his seat and took his leave.
