I had watched all of Wesley’s works and had seen that interview he did before leaving the industry.
In my opinion, Wesley’s patriotic film wasn’t that bad. It meticulously refined the plot based on authentic historical events. However, in striving for historical accuracy, it naturally couldn’t deliver the kind of plot twists that fans craved—unlike his earlier fictional suspense dramas.
So really, it was the fans who failed to grasp the narrative demands of both suspense dramas and patriotic films. They approached this movie with personal bias, viewing a patriotic epic through the lens of a suspense thriller—and naturally found it lacking in the fundamental traits of its own genre.
