"Alright then, don’t need to tell Ethan," Clara said.
Nathaniel wasn’t buying it—no way those two hadn’t had a serious blow-up.
Still, it wasn’t his place to pry. This was Clara’s business. He shouldn't get involved too much.
"Okay, I won’t say anything. So, what’s your plan now?" Nathaniel cut right to the point.
Clara suddenly tilted her head up, eyes landing on him. The look in her eyes made Nathaniel fall silent for a moment.
"What do you want to tell me?" he asked, tone calm and unreadable.
Clara gave a faint smile. "I need a favor. From you. But if it's too much, I get it."
"Go ahead," Nathaniel said without hesitation.
"I need a place to stay," she said clearly, word by word. "Somewhere no one can find me. I just want peace."
And by “no one,” she clearly meant Ethan.
Nathaniel got it instantly.
He looked at her, and Clara didn’t look away.
Silence lingered between them. Long enough that Clara almost thought he was going to say no.
