Chapter 1005 What I Want… Is To Be Mrs. Brighthall!

Brendan clenched his fists. He was strapped with choices. He nodded. “Fine. You have a deal. When is the excursion?” Emily thought for a moment. “I’ll tell you some other time. My dad just left us, see. We’re all grieving, so there’s no way I’d be in the mood for sightseeing. Still, I’ll make it soon. You can hardly wait too, can you, Mr. Brighthall?” “You’re right. Please tell me as soon as you’re free.” He turned on his heels and left without a second thought. Emily looked at his hurriedly vanishing back and the food on the table. Something glistened in her eyes—a thirst for conquest. He felt nothing about her. That woman, whoever she was, must be very important to him… Now she was curious. She paid the bill and hurried home. Her mother, Madame Collins, was all alone in the living room. Seeing her daughter’s return, she frowned slightly. “Your dad’s only been buried for a few days, young lady! How could you just leave like this? Don’t tell me you’re planning to return overseas because I’m not approving it! You’re the heiress to the family! I don’t care if you think there’s something more important to you out there. You’re to take up our family business no matter what! This family is not going to fall on your generation!” “Yeah, whatever,” Emily answered flatly. In truth, she felt nothing for her family. Even her father’s death got only a few performative tears from her. “Now that he’s gone, I’ll have to take up the mantle and inherit the family’s business. I mean, if not for our family, then who’s going to recognize me as one of the elites? That’s never going to happen, so you can stop fretting now.” Ambition shone from her mien. That look on her face pleased her mother. A man came inside. “Miss Collins? Here’s what you asked.” Emily took the documents and sat next to her mother. Eyeing the folder, Madame Collins found it to be about a young woman named Deirdre McKinnon. “Who’s that? I’ve never seen her before. Which family’s daughter is this?” “Please, she’s not from any elite family.” Emily sneered. “She’s Brendan Brighthall’s pet.” “Brendan Brighthall?” Madame Collins’ eyes shone. “The heir who leads the Brighthall Group? Well, he’s one of the most talented youths in your generation, sure. But isn’t his lover a woman named Charli McKinsey?” “Ha! That walking advertisement for plastic surgery could never attract his eyes. She was just his cannon fodder.” Emily studied Deirdre’s picture intently. The young woman wore no makeup, yet she was so indescribably beautiful. Even Emily froze for a moment when she looked at her. She could see why Brendan would treasure someone like this. As she flipped through the file, though, Emily became certain. This Deirdre was nothing more than a bimbo. If Brendan had even a shred of ambitious steak, he would know who was a better match for him. Emily’s lips curled into a confident smile. Madame Collins detected it, and her maternal instinct immediately clued her in. “You’re not thinking of replacing this Deirdre girl, are you?” “Replace her?” Emily hated how the word sounded. “She’s so below me replacing her would be a stain in me. What I really want is to be Mrs. Brighthall!” Madame Collins was aghast. When she finally reeled out of shock, she thought it was ridiculous. “Brendan isn’t an easy target to manipulate, young lady. He’s famously unsentimental. He would send even his own lover to prison without batting an eyelash,” she pointed out. “This means he’s a tough beast to handle. You might just end up battered.” “I love a tough beast. That’s where the real challenge is. It’s how I can quickly gain power and respect in Neve before bringing our family business to new heights. I will accept no one else!” She flipped to another page and narrowed her eyes. “Well, well, well. This Deirdre McKinnon is pregnant.”
