Chapter 1028 He Went To A Hotel With Miss Collins
Ophelia's blood boiled while Deirdre looked on, apologetic. "I'm sorry, Mom! I just… couldn't help but feel a little worried, okay? Brendan has never not answered my call or not left me a message somewhere before, so…"
"Worried?" Ophelia snickered.
Mrs. Engel knew what that meant. She swooped in immediately. "Wait, Mrs. McKinnon! We need to wait until Mr. Brighthall is back so they can settle it themselves!"
"What's there to settle, huh? Especially after what he did! Who does he take my daughter for!?" Ophelia's voice shook with fury. "I can't believe you, Simone. You're acting like he's your master you must defend just because he pays you? Think about it! Ask yourself honestly. Is it fair to sweep this under the carpet instead of letting Dee know!?"
Mrs. Engel was flustered. "No, Mrs. McKinnon, that's not what I'm doing here! He pays me, but it doesn't mean I don't know who's the one looking out for me the most. I only answered his call for a housekeeper because I wanted to care for Deirdre!" she rebutted hotly. "It's just… My gut feeling tells me there's a misunderstanding here, and I think it's better to wait for the other person in question to come home before jumping to conclusions…"
Their sudden quarrel hit Deirdre's head like a hammer, causing her head to spin. She was severely uneasy, her face turned ashen, but something worse still was throbbing in her chest. Something confusing and suffocating, as if she had swallowed a rock. She clenched the edge of her nightgown to steady herself against her headache. "What are you two talking about? Is it news about Brendan?"
Mrs. Engel shut her mouth haplessly, but Ophelia stepped in and filled her silence without a second thought. "Of course there is! In fact, it's quite world-shattering, too!"
Her tone galvanized whatever anxiety Deirdre was already feeling. "W-What's that supposed to mean, mom?"
"Reporters have taken pictures of Brendan and Emily staying at a hotel and published them online!"
Deirdre felt an explosion in her brain as if a duke had been dropped right inside her skull.
"No. No, that can't be true, can it?"
"The photos are already out there! How is it supposed to be fake? They were seen with their arms around each other while standing in front of the reception counter! For Christ's sake, Brendan was practically hanging by that Collins girl's body just to stand on his feet! These two were just cuddling right there for everyone to gawk at!"
Ophelia was broiling. "Your pregnancy stops him from scratching the itch on his manhood, right? So he got that Collins girl to satisfy him instead, didn't he!? Who cares about you, am I right!?"
Black spots were buzzing in Deirdre's vision. Her head was spinning so much that she was finding it hard to breathe. She had exhausted an entire night, worried about his safety, sitting on pins and needles, waiting for any news on him. She could give up an entire night of sleep because she was so terrified of him being in danger, yet all that got her was the news of him being with Emily all along.
No wonder she could not reach either of their phones. They were too busy to answer her annoying calls, were they not?
Deirdre's face went pale. For the first time, she realized how biting the morning had been all along. She was quivering.
Mrs. Engel felt a pang in her chest. "Mrs. Brighthall, please, you need to trust Mr. Brighthall! This could very well be an accident! You should know what kind of man he is by now, right? He didn't even care about Miss McKinney, so why would he suddenly do this to Miss Collins, who came from nowhere?"
"That's enough!" Ophelia snapped. "You really think you're doing this for Dee's sake, Simone? No, you're just giving her more false hope! What happens when the bubble bursts, huh? All she'll get is more pain!
"That's the cruel reality of relationships! Only clear-eyed people who cut ties when they see their partners' true faces are safe! Don't you get it!?"
Conflict dawned on Mrs. Engel's face. "But I know the kind of man Mr. Brighthall is, Mrs. McKinnon…"
