Henry Smith had no clue why I was crying—he probably thought I was just upset about his injury. After paying the bill, he pulled me out gently, trying to calm me down. "Don’t stress, it's just a bit of blood. Looks uglier than it really is.”
Yeah right. Like I was gonna buy that. I dragged him straight to the hospital.
Once the doctor patched up the cut on Henry’s right arm, he glanced at the cast on my right one and chuckled, “You two sure look like a match made in heaven.”
I couldn’t even fake a laugh. The guilt weighing on me made it impossible. I just looked away and turned to leave.
“Sophie, what’s really going on? Something’s not right with you today.” Henry caught up to me, his voice low and firm, like a stone breaking the still surface of water.
My chest tightened, and I couldn’t meet his eyes. I stared at the ground and muttered, “Nothing.”
