Chapter 83
As soon as Kevin Walker left, the air in the exam room turned heavy.
Henry Smith and I were stuck in this cramped little space sectioned off with blue cotton curtains. Aside from a single bed and a couple of medical machines, it was bare.
He got tired of standing and sat down beside me on the bed, making the already narrow space even more crowded.
I had to curl up my legs just to fit. I glared at him and snapped, "Do you always doubt people like this? Or is it just me you don't trust?"
"It's not that I don't trust you." He reached over, touching my forehead gently. His voice, for once, was soft.
But it felt fake to me. I jerked upright. "If you trust me, then why did you have to do that test?"
He shifted a bit, crossing one leg over the other. "It’s not about trust. I just couldn’t afford to risk it."
I stared at him, this man who always had a wild streak. The calm, self-assured guy in a suit now sounded way too unsure. That really threw me off.
It just wasn’t like him.
