Chapter 4 Hansel Is Not the Savior
Evelyn froze, her eyes flickering with guilt.
Nancy knew instantly that she had guessed right. She wasn't sure if Hansel knew the truth about Evelyn's fake pregnancy, but now she was certain. She had given them too much leeway. No wonder they kept scheming against her.
"Fine," Nancy said coolly. "Let's do a check-up right here in front of everyone. If you're really pregnant and something happened to the baby, I'll take full responsibility. But if you're not..."
Her lips curled in a sharp smile as she discreetly pressed her fingers against Evelyn's wrist, checking her pulse. "Explain yourself to all these reporters, because I won't stand for being slandered."
"I don't need you to take responsibility. Out of respect for you being Hansel's ex-wife, I'll let this go. Just leave." Evelyn's knuckles turned white as she clutched Hansel's hand. Her panic was obvious.
The more she resisted, the more Nancy pushed.
Even Hansel frowned. "Evelyn, just do it. If there's something wrong with you or the baby, she'll have to pay for it. She can cook for you, wash your clothes, and even serve you and the child until you're satisfied."
He glared at Nancy viciously. "You're destined to be her maid!"
Was he trying to make his still-legally-wedded wife serve the mistress and her illegitimate child?
Nancy let out a sharp, bitter laugh. Only Hansel could come up with something that shameless.
"Perfect. Let's do the check-up now." She turned to Evelyn. "After you, Ms. York."
Evelyn shook her head frantically, fighting back with all she had. "I said no! Are you deaf? I'm not doing it!" She completely lost control, shrieking as she clutched Hansel's arm. "I'm fine, Hansel. Let's just go home. The baby and I need to rest."
She tugged on his hand, trying to drag him away.
But Nancy stepped in front of her. "How dare you fake a pregnancy and slander me! You were perfectly fine a moment ago, but now, you're in trouble."
At that, she slapped Evelyn across the face. The sound of the slap echoed through the hospital lobby.
Everyone froze in shock.
Along with it came Hansel's furious roar, Evelyn's shrill screams, and the excited chatter of onlookers snapping photos. In an instant, the entire lobby dissolved into chaos.
"And you—cheating during our marriage, demanding I serve your mistress? Where did you find the audacity? Scum like you two belong in hell!"
"Call the police! Arrest her!" Evelyn shrieked.
Hansel clutched his bleeding face, ducking from Nancy's blows. "Nancy, I saved your life! Is this how you repay me? You ungrateful, backstabbing witch!"
His words made her pause. Her hand froze mid-swing. Then, she grabbed his collar, yanked him close, and stared at him right in the eye. "Was it really you who saved me five years ago?"
"Of course! You were covered in blood and half-dead. Who else would have bothered but me?"
Nancy's fingers dug into his joints until he screamed, "I'll talk! I'll talk!"
"Tell me the truth, or I'll make sure your legs end up the way they used to be," threatened Nancy.
"Stop it! I'll tell you!" His cries echoed through the lobby.
It turned out that during the chain collision years ago, she had blacked out from her injuries and was dragged from the burning, about-to-explode car by someone who risked everything to save her.
That person left without a word. Hansel had also been injured in the crash, but he regained consciousness in the ambulance before she did.
Because she hadn't seen her savior's face, and because Hansel had skillfully hinted at it, she had believed all these years that he had saved her.
Later, when he was left crippled, he told her that his legs would never have been ruined if it hadn't been for saving her.
She had been foolish enough to swallow his lies, letting him trample all over her for years.
The question that had haunted her for five years was finally answered, and Nancy felt a rare sense of relief. But if it hadn't been Hansel, then who had actually saved her back then?
It wasn't that no one had tried to investigate back then, but the trail had been wiped clean, leaving no clues to follow. She should have realized long ago that Hansel was never that benevolent.
She had been too blind to see the truth. But why hadn't that person wanted her to find out?
Before she could sort through her thoughts, the police arrived to take her in.
Hansel and Evelyn clung to each other as they staggered along, wiping the blood from their faces. Hansel snarled, "This time you're finished, Nancy. I'll sue you until you rot in prison!"
"Quite the bold claim, Mr. Graham." Tessa Lorton's voice cut through the chaos. She had just returned after sending Sebastian for treatment, and the hospital's director was trailing closely behind her.
Gasps erupted all around.
Everyone knew the director of Mercy Hospital was an internationally renowned neurosurgeon. Even top businessmen and officials had to wait months for a chance to meet him, and the meetings only happened if he felt like it.
Yet here he was, trailing behind her like he was her assistant. Who exactly was she?
Even Hansel and Evelyn were dumbfounded. But in their eyes, it didn't matter. Nancy had committed a crime. No one could save her now.
