Whether or not Susan joined Heartbeat Moment had nothing to do with Charles.
At least, it shouldn’t have.

His gaze faltered.
Just for a moment.
He couldn’t seem to look away from her eyes.
They were unfamiliar... and yet achingly familiar. There was something about the way Susan looked at him—unflinching, calm, almost defiant. In that one fleeting glance, he saw someone else.
Someone who no longer existed.
A shadow from the past.
An invisible weight settled over his chest, pressing into his ribs like grief revisited. He didn’t even know Susan. But something about her stirred something raw and buried—something that refused to stay buried.
Why does she feel so familiar?
He shouldn’t care. He knew that.
But he couldn't just stand by. He couldn’t watch her get cornered, not like that.
Not again.
He wasn’t even thinking anymore.
