"Even if you hadn't agreed, I would've just given up the marriage alliance," I explained, not wanting Maurice to misunderstand. "Business can always be done again, but I couldn't go against my own heart and be with him."
"But you seemed to like him a lot back then," he added.
I used to have parents who loved each other deeply. After that tragedy, I kept chasing a kind of imagined perfection, clinging to it blindly. It wasn't until I died that I realized I had only been lying to myself.
"Because I was young. If I didn't cling to liking someone back then, life felt empty," I confessed. "Later on, I understood that it was never love."
Maurice and I made an agreement that we would give it three years. If, after three years, we felt we weren't right for each other, we would let each other go.
