This was a question Juliet had had in her heart for many years. She didn't understand why her mother could stand a man like her father.
Jolene's gaze wandered out the window. She sighed long and hard, a sound filled with exasperation as well as acceptance. There wasn't a single hint of regret, however.
"Well… I fell in love with your father's looks back when I was young," Jolene said. A shy, girlish smile appeared on her lips as she reminisced about the past. "Those eyes of his—one look was enough to disarm you for good. I'd get so angry whenever he got reckless. Yet the moment I looked at James, I'd soften up and not be able to stay angry at him anymore."
James' face surfaced in Juliet's mind. It was true that James was a very handsome man.
