"What is it, dear? Is Dad not being nice to you?" Jolene said. A troubled look then appeared on her face. "But I'm forbidden from bringing children along with me." Juliet knew that her mother was working as a housekeeper in some other family. But what could Juliet do? Those bad men came to her house every single day. She was so afraid one of them would pounce on her one day. Jolene hugged Juliet. "I'll go talk to your Dad and tell him to be nicer to you, okay?" What was the point of that? James would always put on an act, only treating Juliet well whenever Jolene was around. He would spend his days attending to Jolene, forgoing his card games with his friends. Juliet watched Jolene giggle delightfully after hearing what James said. Jolene then handed the latter a wad of cash. Juliet then understood that one needed to depend on oneself in life.
