Asher had spoken in such a matter-of-fact manner. To Juliet, his condescending sense of charity was even worse than direct humiliation.
She suddenly let out a defeated chuckle.
That was why everyone thought she should be grateful to Asher and that she must not wrong him in any way.
Juliet said, "Yes, of course. It means nothing to you, Mr. Greene. You're a rich man, and you're only providing for the Stones—the pathetic parasites—out of the kindness of your heart. Should I get down on my knees and kiss the ground beneath your feet?"
Asher's expression shifted. "You're my wife. Isn't it my duty to take care of your family?"
"Your duty?" Juliet scoffed as she nodded. "Yes, and it's your duty to take care of Evangeline, right? After all, she's your teacher's daughter, isn't she?"
That struck a sore spot.
Asher argued, "What does Evangeline have to do with this? That's a completely different matter altogether!"
"How are they different at all?" Juliet retorted.
