In the end, Louisa didn't manage to fool Elijah with her lie. Since she couldn't deceive him, she stopped trying.
Louisa put her phone away with an air of composure, though she felt it vibrate again. Someone had sent another message, but she couldn't afford to look at it now.
Louisa drove them back, while Elijah lounged like a king in the passenger seat, legs casually crossed. His long arm draped over the back of her seat, looking calm and effortless.
"Why didn't you say yes to her?" Elijah asked.
Louisa knew he was referring to Danica's offer to take her to the person she was looking for. "I don't trust her," she replied.
Elijah's fingers became entangled in her long hair. The strands felt like silk as he wound a lock of it around his fingertip. "Is there anyone you do trust?"
The question hit home. She had once placed her faith in Thaddeus, but he had destroyed the last bit of that trust.
Her silence said everything. Then, without warning, Elijah placed his hand on the steer
