If I hadn't known that Nellie didn't love me, I might have believed she was genuinely worried about my disappearance. It turned out she was just annoyed that Daisy had been spending so much time with my mother.
Back when I was swamped with work, Nellie didn't really care about Daisy much, so I'd suggested my mother take care of her. However, Nellie had said something I've never been able to forget.
"What's Daisy going to turn out like, raised by your small-town, ordinary family? I can't have everyone saying my daughter has no manners or class."
She looked down on my family and me. Naturally, she would never allow my mother to take care of Daisy.
