Nellie left the hospital as if sleepwalking. I sat in the passenger seat, watching her run one red light after another, unable to make sense of her behavior. She had said cruel things to me more than once. "Why won't you just die? If it weren't for you, I never would have had to separate from Jeremy." My marriage to Nellie hadn't been born of love.
